Dhanteras 2026: What to Buy in Silver — Coin or Jewellery?
Share
Dhanteras 2026 falls on Friday, 6 November. If you have set aside ₹2,000 or ₹5,000 for it, what to buy in silver on Dhanteras is the question you are stuck on, not the muhurat: a coin, or something you will wear.
Most pages ranking for this are panchang sites that sell nothing, or bullion dealers who sell only coins. So this one answers it against our own interest: House of Binti does not sell 999 coins, and for some of what people want on Dhanteras, a coin is the better buy.
Dhanteras 2026 is Friday, 6 November
Dhanteras is Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, and in 2026 it opens the five-day run that includes Diwali on Sunday, 8 November. Bhai Dooj falls on 10 or 11 November depending on your family's panchang, so use your own calendar rather than a generic one.
The Pradosh Kaal window, and why buying is not the puja
The Lakshmi and Kuber puja is done in pradosh kaal, the twilight stretch beginning at sunset. Most panchangs put that on 6 November at roughly 6:15 to 8:15 PM, but it moves by the better part of an hour between Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru, so take your timing from a panchang set to where you live.
Buying need not happen inside that window. In most households the metal is bought during the day and placed in the evening puja, so an online order has to arrive before the evening, not during it.
Why 2026's dates fall later than 2025's
Dhanteras was 18 October in 2025. The shift is Adhik Maas, the extra lunar month that keeps the Hindu calendar in step with the solar year: a double Jyeshtha ran 17 May to 15 June 2026 and pushed everything after it back by about nineteen days.
Before Dhanteras: the Pushya window on 1 November
Pushya nakshatra is the Moon's own star, and buying metal while it runs is widely held to be auspicious — a belief, not a guarantee.
Several jeweller pages this year list two Pushya windows, on 31 October and 1 November. Drik Panchang's New Delhi timings show one stretch, from 5:39 AM on Sunday, 1 November to 4:30 AM on Monday, 2 November, and nothing on 31 October. Because 1 November is a Sunday, it is Ravi Pushya. So there is one usable day rather than two, and a full day rather than a scramble. Timings shift by city, so confirm yours.
The real question: a coin, or something you wear?
What a 999 silver coin is for
A 999 coin is a way of holding silver. It is close to pure metal, priced against the silver rate, and when you sell it the buyer pays for its weight. If your reason is "I want to own some silver", a coin or bar from a certified mint does that and a pendant does not. We do not stock coins, so buy from a bullion dealer.
What a 925 piece is for
A 925 piece is a way of using silver. It gets worn, it can be handed on, and it is still in the house in twenty years because somebody puts it on, where a coin sits in a locker. If Dhanteras is when your family buys silver, buy the one that gets used.
The minting premium nobody mentions
A coin is not sold to you at the silver rate. Retail premiums on small bullion pieces commonly run around 2–5% over spot, and the smallest denominations carry the highest premium per gram. You pay that going in and do not get it back.
999 vs 925: purity, softness, and why you cannot wear 999
999 silver is 99.9% silver. 925, or sterling, is 92.5% silver with the rest usually copper. That 7.5% is not padding: fine silver bends out of shape in ordinary wear, and the alloy is what lets a ring hold its round and a clasp keep its spring. Which is why 999 goes into coins and 925 into jewellery.
Worth knowing at a counter: silver hallmarking in India is voluntary rather than mandatory, so an unhallmarked piece is not automatically fake. Our guide to identifying real 925 sterling silver covers the home tests.
What ₹1,500, ₹3,000 and ₹5,000 realistically buy in 925
Real numbers from our catalogue, to calibrate against what you have set aside.
Those are listed prices at the time of writing; the under ₹1,499 and under ₹2,999 collections show the band quickest, and the spiritual collection holds the Om, Swastik and Ek Onkar pieces. For scale: at a silver rate around ₹255 a gram in September 2026, ₹3,000 is under twelve grams of metal before premium.
Making charges, and what comes back at resale
A finished silver price is metal weight, plus making, plus tax, and the making does not come back: a jeweller buying the piece back pays for the silver by weight at that day's rate. That is the honest case for a coin if your intent is storage, and against treating jewellery as an investment. Full breakdown: how silver jewellery is priced in India.
The Lakshmi-Ganesh coin question, answered plainly
A good share of Dhanteras coin buying is not about bullion at all. People want a Lakshmi-Ganesh piece for the puja ghar, and a coin is the form it is usually sold in. If that is your reason, a coin is not the only answer, because an embossed coin goes back in its box after the puja while a framed piece stays out — the reasoning we set out for idols and frames at Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri.
Ours is the Laxmi Ganesh Frame at ₹799: 925, not 999, and not an investment. What we will not claim is that a pendant substitutes for a coin meant for the puja itself.
If you are buying to gift rather than to keep
A coin is a weak gift: it carries no choice, it does not get worn, and it reads as money without the flexibility of money. Which is why the shortlists in gifting and best selling lean to studs, chains and bands.
Sizing is the usual blocker: studs, pendants, chains and pendant sets need no measurement, rings and kadas do. If you cannot ask, stay in the first group and add gift packaging.
Where buy-one-get-one fits a keep-one-give-one purchase
The standing Buy One, Get One Free offer runs across a 312-product collection. The lower-priced piece is the free one and it applies automatically, but it is not sitewide, so check yours is in that collection. It suits the keep-one-give-one purchase: one for the house, one to hand over, for the price of the dearer one.
Ordering in time for 6 November
The metal needs to be in the house before the evening of Friday 6 November, or before Sunday 1 November if your family buys in Pushya. The first week of November is the heaviest courier week of the Indian year, and personalised pieces need production time on top of shipping. Order by the last week of October for a metro address, earlier for a smaller town or anything personalised.
Frequently asked questions
What is the date and buying muhurat for Dhanteras 2026? Friday, 6 November 2026, on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi. The puja is done in pradosh kaal after sunset, which most panchangs place at roughly 6:15 to 8:15 PM, varying by city.
Is it better to buy a silver coin or silver jewellery on Dhanteras? A 999 coin if you want to store value, because it sells back by weight; a 925 piece if you want something worn or given. The mistake is buying jewellery expecting it to behave like bullion, or a coin expecting it to feel like a gift.
Can you wear 999 pure silver? Not practically. Fine silver bends and scratches in everyday wear, which is why jewellery is made in 925 sterling.
Why is silver bought on Dhanteras at all? The day is associated with Dhanvantari and with Lakshmi and Kuber, and bringing new metal into the house is held in many families to be auspicious. That is a custom and a belief, not a demonstrable claim.
Is Pushya Nakshatra a better day to buy silver than Dhanteras? Neither is better in any way we can evidence. By Drik Panchang's New Delhi timings, Pushya runs from 5:39 AM on Sunday 1 November to 4:30 AM on Monday 2 November, making it Ravi Pushya. It falls five days earlier, which is easier on delivery.
