How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home (Ring Size Chart)

Buying a ring online is easy — until you have to pick a size. The good news is that you do not need a jeweller's ring sizer. With a strip of paper and a ruler you can find your ring size at home in about two minutes. Here is how to do it properly, plus a full ring size chart in millimetres.

What is a ring size, exactly?

A ring size is simply a number that represents the inside circumference of the ring, measured in millimetres. Every sizing scale — US, UK, European, Indian — is just a different way of labelling that same measurement. This is why measuring in mm is the most reliable approach: once you know your circumference, you can convert to any scale.

Method 1: The paper strip method (most popular)

  1. Cut a thin strip of paper about 5 mm wide and 10 cm long. Avoid thick card — it distorts the measurement.
  2. Wrap it around the base of the finger you plan to wear the ring on.
  3. Pull it snug, but not tight enough to squeeze the skin.
  4. Mark where the end overlaps with a pen.
  5. Unwrap the strip and measure from the end to your mark with a ruler, in millimetres.

That measurement is your finger circumference. Match it to the chart below.

Method 2: Measure a ring you already own

If you have a ring that fits the same finger well, this is the most accurate method of all. Lay the ring flat and measure the inside diameter across the middle, in mm. Then multiply by 3.14 to get the circumference. A ring with a 17 mm inside diameter is roughly 53.4 mm around.

Method 3: The string method

Works the same way as the paper strip, but use non-stretchy string or dental floss. Avoid wool or elastic thread — anything that stretches will give you a size that is too small.

Ring size chart (circumference in mm)

Circumference (mm) Inside diameter (mm) US / Canada size
46.8 14.9 4
49.3 15.7 5
51.9 16.5 6
54.4 17.3 7
57.0 18.1 8
59.5 18.9 9
62.1 19.8 10
64.6 20.6 11
67.2 21.4 12

Note that many Indian jewellers also use a separate 1–30 scale, so if you have been given an Indian size before, share your mm measurement with us instead — it removes all ambiguity.

When is the best time to measure your finger?

This matters more than people expect. Fingers change size through the day and with the weather.

  • Measure at the end of the day, when your fingers are at their largest.
  • Measure at normal room temperature. Cold fingers shrink, and you will end up with a ring that will not go on in summer.
  • Measure three or four times and take the average. A single reading can easily be off by half a size.
  • Avoid measuring straight after exercise, a hot shower, or a salty meal — all cause temporary swelling.

What if your knuckle is bigger than your finger base?

Very common, and the main cause of rings that spin. Measure both your knuckle and the base of the finger. Choose a size that slides over the knuckle without forcing, and accept slightly more movement at the base. If the gap between the two measurements is large, a slightly wider band will sit more stably.

Does band width change the size you need?

Yes. A wide band (roughly 6 mm and above) covers more of your finger and feels tighter than a thin band of the same size. If you are choosing a broad ring, size up by half a size. Thin, delicate bands can be taken in your exact measured size.

What if you are between two sizes — or buying a gift?

If you fall between sizes, go up, not down. A slightly loose ring can be worn; a tight one cannot, and resizing is harder on rings with stones set all the way round.

If you are buying a surprise gift and have no measurement at all, the safest route is an adjustable open ring. Designs like the Lucky Fin Evil Eye Ring, the Dual Gem Harmony Ring and the Ocean Mist Ring are open-band styles that flex to fit a range of finger sizes — which removes the guesswork entirely.

Frequently asked questions

How can I measure my ring size without a ring sizer? Wrap a thin strip of paper around the base of your finger, mark the overlap, and measure the length in mm. Match that circumference to a size chart.

Is it better for a ring to be loose or tight? Slightly loose. It should slide over the knuckle with gentle resistance and not fall off when you shake your hand.

Do silver rings stretch over time? Sterling silver is fairly soft, so thin bands can distort slightly with heavy daily wear, but they do not meaningfully stretch to a larger size.

What is the most common women's ring size in India? Most women fall between a 6 and an 8 on the US scale, but there is wide variation — always measure rather than assume.
