Karwa Chauth Gift for Wife: Sargi, Silver and the 2026 Date
Share
Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October. The useful question when you are choosing a Karwa Chauth gift for your wife is not which piece photographs best. It is which piece she can still be wearing at moonrise, sixteen hours into a fast, in heavy clothes, with a thali in her hands.
This covers the date, the sargi and the baya that comes back, and which silver survives the day. Customs are regional and vary by family, so what follows is practice, not a ruling.
Karwa Chauth 2026 is Thursday, 29 October
The fast is kept on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi. North Indian panchangs, which count months purnimanta, list it under Kartik; the amanta calendars of Maharashtra, Gujarat and the south show the same day under Ashwin. The month label changes, the day does not: Drik Panchang, Samvat and Muhurat Choghadiya all place it on 29 October 2026. Because the tithi is read against local timings, panchangs put it for North America on Wednesday, 28 October; the UK, the Gulf and Singapore keep the Thursday.
Moonrise runs roughly 8:05 to 8:30 PM across north India: check your city
Moonrise breaks the fast, and it is local. For 29 October 2026, published times put Lucknow near 8:06 PM, Chandigarh 8:12 PM, Delhi 8:17 PM and Jaipur 8:28 PM, earlier in the east and later in the west. Sources differ by a few minutes, so treat these as a window. The puja is usually done before moonrise, in Delhi roughly 5:38 to 6:56 PM.
What is actually worn on the day, and why
The sixteen shringar, in the version people actually follow
Solah shringar is the traditional set of sixteen adornments from head to toe, from bindi and sindoor down to payal and bichiya. The list is not fixed and published versions disagree on two or three items. What survives a working Thursday is the short version: sindoor, bindi, mehendi, bangles, a necklace, payal and bichiya.
Bichiya and payal: the two pieces a married woman already wears
Bichiya (toe rings) and payal (anklets) are the two items on that list that are silver by convention rather than gold, and in most households they are already on her feet. That makes them the easiest to buy for: the pair she wears is evidence of what fits, so a new one is a replacement rather than a guess. We have written separately on which toe the bichiya goes on and on choosing a payal.
The wearability test: a full day of fasting in heavy clothes
Here is the filter almost no gift guide applies. From before sunrise to moonrise she is neither eating nor drinking, she is in a saree or a heavy suit, her hands carry mehendi she does not want to smudge, and she holds a thali, a karwa and a chalni: the pot the festival is named after, and the sieve she looks through.
Four things that go wrong with jewellery on this day
A dupatta or pallu catches on an open bangle hinge or a dangling charm, and the piece is off by evening.
Anything removed to wash hands gets put down and forgotten.
Sindoor and puja oil work into chain links and engraved grooves. Silver darkens where they sit. That is normal and it cleans off, but not on day one.
A ring bought without a size does not fit a hand swollen through a long day.
Fixed, close-to-the-body pieces are the safer answer.
The sargi thali: what the saas sends, and where silver fits
Sargi is the pre-dawn meal the saas sends her bahu: fruit with high water content, dry fruits, something light such as halwa or a roti, and mithai. Feni with milk is the Punjabi classic.
The other half of the thali is shringar: mehendi, sindoor, bindis, bangles, often a saree piece. That is where silver belongs. It is usually small, because the thali already carries everything else. A pair of bichiya such as the Azure Heart Toe Rings, or a thin payal like the Timeless Ball Anklet, sit in a sargi without taking it over. The sargi is handed over the night before or at four in the morning, so the piece has to be in the house by the 28th.
The baya (or pohi): the return gift the bahu gives back
This is the half of the custom almost nobody writes about. The baya, or pohi in some families, is what the bahu gives back to her mother-in-law around the puja: mithai, dry fruits, a saree piece, and cash or a gift. Silver works here for the reason it works in a sargi: keepable, sensibly priced, no size needed. A small pendant such as the Good Vibes Neckpiece or the Daisy Glow Neckpiece is the right register. It is not universal: plenty of families do the sargi and nothing in return.
Buying a gift when you do not know her size
Toe rings here are listed as free size and adjustable, which makes them close to size-proof. Anklets are listed at 10 inches with a 1-inch extender, covering most adult ankles, but they are priced per single with a pair option above, so decide which you are buying before checkout. Pendants are forgiving on chain length in a way ring size is not, and sit flat under a dupatta instead of swinging into it.
Avoid rings, rigid kadas and closed bangles: each carries a size number that has to be right, and a resize is a trip you have handed her rather than a gift. Loose charm bracelets fail the dupatta test above. A mangalsutra is a replacement decision rather than a surprise, so leave it unless she has asked. Our post on when to gift silver jewellery ranks categories by how little sizing they need.
The full ranges are in toe rings and anklets. For two gifts, a sargi piece and a baya piece, check Buy One, Get One Free first: the lower-priced of the two comes free, applied automatically on the standard cart. It is not sitewide, so confirm your piece is among the 312 listed.
Couple pieces, for households that fast together
Some households now fast together, and matching bands are the usual answer; they sit in twinning jewellery. The caveat is that couple bands are ring-sized and need two sizes rather than none, so check both before planning a pair.
Ordering in time for 29 October
Work backwards from the sargi, not the festival. A piece going into a sargi thali has to be in the house by the morning of 28 October; a gift handed over on the day has the 29th.
No festive cut-off is published here: dispatch depends on your pin code and the shipping policy. As a working rule, order by around 21 October for a metro address and earlier elsewhere; personalised pieces are made to order and run longer. Gift packaging and gifting cover the wrapping, and everything for her is the wider catalogue.
Frequently asked questions
What is the date and moonrise time for Karwa Chauth 2026? Thursday, 29 October 2026 in India, with moonrise near 8:17 PM in Delhi and roughly 8:05 to 8:30 PM across north India. North American panchangs place it a day earlier.
What silver items traditionally go in a sargi thali? Small pieces rather than large ones, because the thali already carries food, mehendi, sindoor, bindis and bangles. Toe rings, a thin anklet or a small pendant are usual, and many send no jewellery at all.
What is baya, and what do you give your saas? Baya, or pohi, is the return gift the bahu gives her mother-in-law around the puja: mithai, dry fruits, a saree piece, and cash or a gift. A small pendant fits the register, and not every family follows it.
Can you wear brand new jewellery while fasting? Nothing in the custom prevents it, and new pieces are commonly sent in the sargi for that purpose. The practical caution is different: a piece worn for the first time on a sixteen-hour day is untested.
What is the last date to order for delivery before 29 October? There is no single published cut-off; it depends on your pin code and the shipping policy in force. Order by around 21 October for a metro address, earlier elsewhere, and treat 28 October as the sargi deadline.
