Men's Silver Chain Types: Cuban, Curb, Box, Figaro & Snake Explained

Chain shopping goes wrong in two places: picking a link type by name without knowing what it does, and picking a length by guess. Both are easy to fix.

The five link types worth knowing

Curb

Interlocking oval links, twisted and flattened so they lie flat against the skin. The most versatile men's chain there is — it does not roll or twist, and it carries a pendant well. If you only ever own one silver chain, this is the sensible one. See the Classic Curb Chain.

Cuban

A curb chain taken heavier — thicker links, tighter interlock, more presence. This is the statement chain, and the one most associated with men's jewellery right now. It carries weight visually, so it works better worn alone than layered.

Box

Square links joined end to end, forming a clean continuous line. Understated and very strong for its weight, which makes it the best choice for hanging a heavier pendant. See the Box Chain.

Figaro

A repeating pattern of two or three short links followed by one long one. The rhythm gives it more visual interest than a plain curb without shouting. The Mini Figaro Chain is the everyday-weight version.

Snake

Choosing a length

Length decides where the chain sits, and that is a styling decision, not a size one:

• 18 inches — sits at the base of the neck. Visible above a crew neck. Reads dressy.
• 20 inches — sits at the collarbone. The most common men's length and the safest default.
• 22 inches — sits just below the collarbone, on the chest. Works with an open collar and with a pendant.
• 24 inches — mid-chest. Statement length, usually worn with a pendant and an open shirt.

If you are between two, size up. A chain that is fractionally too long looks intentional; one that is too tight looks like it belongs to someone else.

Weight and thickness

Thickness is where price lives — a 3 mm and a 6 mm chain in the same link type and length can differ several times over in cost, because you are buying grams of silver. Layering, if you must

Two chains work if they differ clearly in length (at least 4 inches apart) and in weight. Two similar chains at similar lengths just look like you could not decide. Pair a fine box chain at 20 inches with a heavier curb at 24.

Will a silver chain turn my neck green? Sterling silver does not — that is a copper-heavy alloy or plated base metal problem. Real 925 may tarnish darker but does not stain skin green.
