Why silver is linked to the moon: Chandra, chandi and Sharad Purnima
Share
Ask why Indian households buy silver on Dhanteras, why a jyotishi who tells you to keep off gold still puts a silver ring on your hand, or why a newborn gets a silver kada rather than gold. The answer lands in the same place: silver belongs to the moon. Almost every Indian family carries the belief. Almost nobody can explain it.
Here is why silver is linked to the moon: where the belief comes from and what it claims. This is a reference for a widely held belief, not a religious or astrological ruling, and nothing in it is medical advice.
Sharad Purnima 2026 falls on Sunday, 25 October
Sharad Purnima — the Ashwin full moon, also called Kojagari or Kojagara Purnima — falls on Sunday, 25 October 2026 by Drik Panchang, with the Purnima tithi running from 11:55 am that day to 9:41 am on 26 October. The vigil is kept through that night, so a family that sits up means the night of Sunday 25 into Monday 26.
Some calendars print 26 October instead, because the tithi is still running at sunrise that morning. Both mean the same full moon. Times are location-specific, so check a panchang set to your city.
Chandra and chandi: the link between the moon and the metal
In Sanskrit, Chandra means shining or bright, and names both the moon and the graha that presides over it. The Hindi word for silver, chandi, is usually explained as coming from the same root — a derivation that is popular rather than settled, since the formal Sanskrit words for silver are rajata and raupya, and rajata is cognate with Latin argentum.
The association itself is not in doubt: classical Hindu texts on metals group them with celestial bodies, and silver sits with the Moon.
Why silver, and not any other white metal
Partly availability: of the metals a classical text had to work with — silver, gold, copper, iron, tin, lead — only silver is white and bright enough to stand for the moon. Partly behaviour: silver has the highest reflectivity of any metal. Consistent with the belief, not proof of it.
Sharad Purnima: kheer under the moon, and where silver comes in
The best-known custom is kheer left out in the moonlight overnight and eaten in the morning, on the belief that this night's rays carry amrit. Silver enters through the vessel: households use silver or steel rather than plastic, and some drop in a silver coin. Practice varies by region and family.
Pushya Nakshatra: why the Moon's own star became a buying day
Pushya is the nakshatra most widely treated as auspicious for buying, and is often called the Moon's star. That is shorthand: Pushya sits in Karka, the Moon's own sign, which is where the moon link comes from — but its planetary lord is Shani.
It comes round roughly every 27 days. The one in the 2026 festive run-up is Sunday, 1 November, which makes it Ravi Pushya — Pushya falling on a Sunday.
What people believe silver does: calm, clarity, cooling
Silver is said to be cooling, to steady an unsettled mind, to help with sleep. Children and new mothers are given it more readily than gold.
What the belief actually claims, and what it does not
In Jyotish, Chandra governs manas — mind, emotion, memory — and the mother, so "silver settles the mind" extends what the graha already governs. It is a claim about a graha, not about chemistry: the metal is said to strengthen the graha.
We cannot tell you whether that works. If sleep or anxiety is affecting your health, see a doctor — a silver ring is not a substitute for one.
Monday, Chandra dosha and the silver ring advice you have been given
Monday — Somvar, the moon's day — carries all of this. A moon-related piece is first worn on a Monday morning within two hours of sunrise, during shukla paksha, the waxing fortnight, often after a cleansing in raw milk, honey, Gangajal, ghee and tulsi.
Chandra dosha is used loosely for several chart placements and has no single definition. If you have been told you have it, ask which placement the practitioner saw — the remedy follows from that, not the label.
Why it is usually the little finger — and why jewellers disagree
The little finger of the working hand is the standard instruction. Jewellers push back for reasons unrelated to belief: it is the hardest finger to size and shifts most with heat and cold. That does not make it wrong, but it does mean measuring rather than guessing. Our post on which finger to wear a ring on covers the rest of the hand.
Moonstone, pearl and silver: the three things prescribed together
Moti, the pearl, is Chandra's stone in the navratna scheme, so the instructions arrive as one package: pearl, set in silver, worn on the little finger. Moonstone is often offered as a cheaper substitute, an upratna, though substitutes are contested. Our guide to what navratna means covers all nine gems; the gemstone meanings post covers moonstone.
One caveat decides where your money goes. A jyotish-grade pearl prescribed at a weight in ratti is a different purchase from a pearl used as decoration. The pearls in commercial silver jewellery, ours included, are decorative — buy a prescribed stone from a gem dealer who certifies it.
Which pieces people actually buy for this
Two patterns show up. The first is something worn near the throat. The Pearl Essence Neckpiece at ₹6,999 and the Sea Shell Pendant at ₹6,599 are the best-stocked pieces in the pearl collection, though the second is a shell motif rather than an actual pearl. The simpler Pearl neckpiece at ₹2,999 suits a fixed budget.
The second is plain silver against skin all day, no stone — which is where anklets sit. A payal like the Timeless Ball Anklet, from ₹3,199 for a single, gets worn daily by people who would never call it a remedy. The women's and spiritual collections hold the rest.
Worth separating: the Evil Eye Pearl Bracelet at ₹3,999 puts a pearl beside a nazariya bead — protection from the gaze, not Chandra. The evil eye collection belongs to that tradition, the zodiac rings to a third: western sun signs, not nakshatras.
Three of those — the Pearl Essence Neckpiece, the Sea Shell Pendant and the Evil Eye Pearl Bracelet — sit in the buy one, get one free collection, where the lower-priced of two comes off the bill automatically, no code. It does not cover the whole store.
Three honest caveats if you are buying for belief
The belief is not a guarantee. Nobody here is an astrologer or a doctor. Wanting a piece because you believe in it is a real reason, and still not a promise.
Check the silver is silver. Plated brass and German silver are not. Our guide on how to identify real 925 sterling silver covers the hallmark, magnet and weight tests.
If a stone and weight were prescribed, buy to that spec. A 925 setting with a decorative pearl will not meet a ratti specification.
Frequently asked questions
What is the exact date of Sharad Purnima in 2026? Sunday, 25 October 2026 by Drik Panchang, with the Purnima tithi running from 11:55 am that day to 9:41 am on 26 October. Because the tithi is still running at sunrise on the 26th, some calendars print that date instead. Both mean the same full moon.
Does wearing silver really calm you down? There is no evidence the metal acts on the mind, and we are not claiming it does. Many people say they feel calmer wearing it. Treat it as a belief. If anxiety or sleep is a real problem, see a doctor rather than a jeweller.
Which finger should a silver ring go on for Chandra? Usually the little finger of the working hand, first worn on a Monday morning during shukla paksha. Practitioners disagree; some prescribe the ring finger. If someone has read your chart, follow them.
Can you wear silver and gold at the same time? Ordinary practice does not forbid it. Some chart-specific advice keeps remedial pieces apart, but that is one person's instruction rather than a rule. Note that a gold-plated piece rubbing a plain silver one all day will wear its finish off.
Is a silver anklet or a silver ring better for moon-related remedies? Remedial advice almost always specifies a ring, because it lets someone name the metal, stone, finger and day. Anklets are worn for custom, not prescription. If nothing was prescribed, wear whichever you will keep on.
Does the silver need to be a certain weight for it to work? There is no weight rule for wearing silver. Where a weight is specified it is almost always the gemstone's, in ratti, not the metal's. If you were given a number, check which it means.
