Caring for pearls — this part matters

Pearls are organic, and they are the one material in jewellery that genuinely can be ruined by carelessness:

  • Last on, first off. Perfume, hairspray and cosmetics dull the nacre permanently.
  • Never use silver dip or polish on a pearl. It will strip the surface. Polish the silver only, keeping well clear of the stone.
  • Wipe with a soft damp cloth after wearing, and let it dry before storing.
  • Store separately — pearls scratch easily against other jewellery.
