Bhai Dooj Gift for a Brother: Silver Picks, and What He Gives Back
Share
A Bhai Dooj gift for a brother is only half of what the day asks for. Bhai Dooj falls two or three days after Diwali, and it is the one day in the Diwali chain where the gift travels both ways: the sister marks her brother's forehead with a tika and feeds him, and the brother gives something back before he leaves. Most gift guides build only the first half.
There is also a date problem in 2026, and it is real rather than a typo.
Bhai Dooj 2026: 10 or 11 November, and why panchangs disagree
Bhai Dooj is fixed to Kartik Shukla Dwitiya. On the Delhi panchang, that tithi begins around 2:00 PM on Tuesday 10 November 2026 and ends around 3:53 PM on Wednesday 11 November, covering the tail of one afternoon and almost all of the next.
The tika belongs to aparahna, the afternoon segment. Because the tithi is live in the aparahna of both dates, calendars split. Samvat lists Tuesday 10 November. Muhurat Choghadiya and PanchangBodh list Wednesday 11 November, with the tilak window running roughly 1:09–3:19 PM in Delhi and 1:29–3:45 PM in Mumbai. Both readings follow a defensible rule, and we will not settle it for your family.
How to check which date your family follows
Ask whoever fixes dates at home. In most Indian households one person does, and their answer is the answer.
Read the aparahna window for your own city on the panchang your family actually uses; it shifts by twenty minutes or more between Delhi and Mumbai.
The regional name tells you which tradition you are in: Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Phonta in Bengal, Yama Dwitiya in the older texts.
For shipping, plan for the earlier date: anything that lands by 10 November also covers 11 November.
How Bhai Dooj differs from Raksha Bandhan
Just over ten weeks apart, and not the same festival. Raksha Bandhan fell on Friday 28 August 2026, on Shravan Purnima, and the thread is the object at the centre of it — our silver rakhi guide covers that side. Bhai Dooj has no thread: the sister applies tika and serves food, and in the older form the brother travels to her house to eat.
Why the gift goes both ways on this one
Because the visit is the ritual, the return gift is not an afterthought. Budget for two pieces rather than one: usually two mid-priced ones instead of one expensive one.
If he already wears a hoop, bali is the cheapest real-silver entry here: a single Men's Plain Bali (11mm) is ₹899 and a single Classic Plain Bali (14mm) ₹999, with pairs priced higher. If his ear is not pierced, skip it: a gift should not arrive with a decision attached. Single studs run from Mini Ball Studs at ₹1,499 to Divine Trishul Studs at ₹1,799.
Most of the bands and bracelets above sit inside the Buy One, Get One Free collection, as do both men's rings. Both pieces have to come from that collection, only the lower-priced of the two is free, and one order takes one free piece. The Classic Clip Chain, the Box Chain, the bali and the anklets further down sit outside it, so check the collection page before you plan an order around it.
Buying for a brother who does not wear jewellery
Cufflinks, or the plainest band you can find
Plenty of men wear nothing, and a festival will not change that. Two routes work. Aeroplane Cufflinks at ₹5,999 are worn with a shirt rather than read as jewellery, a different proposition for someone who dislikes the category. Or take the plainest band on the list: the ₹1,699 Infinity Band reads closer to a watch strap, and is a low-stakes way to find out whether he will wear anything. Our men's silver guide goes further into what suits whom.
What a brother gives back to a sister
Cash, clothes or sweets in the older custom; in practice now, usually something she will wear. Anklets are safest because they need no size: Flat Snake Anklet from ₹3,799 and Sleek Square Snake Anklet from ₹3,899 are both stocked deep, with the price rising by length. Tennis Bracelet (2mm) at ₹1,799 is the budget option, though stock is thin. A Personalized Name Neckpiece from ₹3,999 is more personal but made to order, so it is an October decision rather than a November one. The rest is in Her.
Matching pieces, for siblings who actually like the idea
The twinning collection is built for couples, and we would rather say so. The plain designs still cross over: Mystic Eye Couple Bands at ₹2,999 read as a matched pair and need no size, while Classic Band Couple Rings at ₹4,599 ask for two ring sizes at checkout. Anything built around hearts lands oddly between siblings.
A first silver piece for a much younger brother or sister
Safe. Chains, lockets, anklets, studs, bali and cufflinks. None need a measurement from you.
Usually fine. Bracelets and bands, though a wrist you have never measured can surprise you. Our wrist-measuring guide takes two minutes.
Do not guess. Rings. Ask, or buy something else: a ring sent back for a size change costs you the delivery window you were protecting.
One order, two festivals: the delivery maths
The week runs Diwali on Sunday 8 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November, then Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 or Wednesday 11 November. One delivery covers all of it, which is the argument for ordering once rather than twice.
Work backwards, and be pessimistic. The Diwali week is the heaviest stretch of the year for Indian courier networks, so late October is a safer dispatch window than early November, and made-to-order pieces need more room again. Check the delivery estimate at checkout and the shipping policy page before you fix a date.
Frequently asked questions
What is the date of Bhai Dooj in 2026? Either Tuesday 10 November or Wednesday 11 November, depending on the panchang your family follows. Samvat lists 10 November; Muhurat Choghadiya and PanchangBodh list 11 November. Ask at home before you fix travel.
Why do some calendars say 10 November and others 11 November? Kartik Shukla Dwitiya begins around 2:00 PM on 10 November and ends around 3:53 PM on 11 November, so the tithi is present during aparahna, the prescribed afternoon window, on both days. Panchangs weigh that overlap differently.
What silver gift works for a brother who does not wear jewellery? Cufflinks, because they are worn with a shirt rather than read as jewellery, or the plainest band you can find. Avoid rings and anything with a motif he would have to explain.
What does a brother traditionally give his sister on Bhai Dooj? Cash, clothes or sweets in the older custom. A piece she can wear daily is the common substitute now, and an anklet or chain sidesteps the sizing problem.
What bracelet or chain size is safe to buy without asking? Chains, anklets, studs and bali need no size; bracelets and bands are usually fine; rings are the one category you should not guess on.
Can I order once and receive it before both Diwali and Bhai Dooj? Yes. They are two to three days apart, so one delivery landing before 8 November covers both. Dispatch in late October rather than early November, when courier networks are busiest.
