Necklace Chain Length Guide for India: 16, 18, 20 or 22 Inches?
Share
Almost every necklace chain length guide on page one was written for American shirt collars, not for India. The numbers are not wrong — 18 inches is 18 inches everywhere — but they answer a different question from yours if you are buying a chain to wear with a high-neck kurti, a saree blouse, or over a mangalsutra you do not take off. Same standard lengths below, re-mapped to the clothes you own.
The numbers first: what 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 inches look like
Chain length is the full loop, clasp included — not the drop down to the pendant.
16 inches (41 cm) — choker. Sits at the base of the throat.
18 inches (46 cm) — princess. On or just below the collarbone. The most-used length, and the safest single answer.
20 inches (51 cm) — an inch or two below the collarbone.
22 inches (56 cm) — mid-chest.
24 inches (61 cm) — lower chest. On most people it clears the head without unclasping.
In older trade vocabulary, 20 to 24 inches is a matinee and 28 inches and up an opera — both words turn up on listings.
How to measure your own neck in thirty seconds
Run a thread from where the pendant should sit, around your neck and back to that point, then lay it against a ruler. Measure standing, over the neckline you will actually wear, thread hanging loose. Pulling it tight hands you a chain a size too short.
Why the standard chart does not transfer to Indian clothes
The imported chart assumes an open collar, where the only variable is your neck. Here the neckline does most of the work. A saree blouse can be cut deep enough that an 18-inch chain lands on fabric instead of skin. A high-neck kurti swallows 16 and 18 inches. A round-neck kurta puts a hard edge exactly where a princess-length pendant wants to sit. And there is often a mangalsutra on the neck already. The question is not “what is my size” but “where does this land, on this outfit, next to what I already wear”.
Matching length to neckline
Round-neck and boat-neck kurtas
18 inches, so the pendant sits above the kurta neckline, the only place it shows. An 18-inch chain like the Mini Figaro Chain (₹2,599) is the default; there are more in the silver chains for women range. On a wide-cut boat neck, drop to 16 inches or the chain disappears into the opening.
Saree blouse necklines, deep and shallow
Measure against the blouse, not your neck. Shallow, high-cut: 18 inches. Deep or sweetheart: 20 to 22 inches, so the pendant rests on skin rather than on worked fabric. A pendant lying on zari reads as clutter.
High-neck kurtis and collared shirts
Anything under 20 inches vanishes. Go to 22 or 24. A 24-inch chain such as the Classic Curb Chain (₹6,599) clears a high neckline and carries enough weight not to look lost on a covered chest.
Anarkalis and heavy festive wear
Here the logic reverses. If the outfit already has a worked yoke, a chain competes rather than adds. Go short at 16 inches, above the work, or let earrings do the job. The exception is a matched pendant set, designed as one unit with its studs.
Chain length for men in India
The general men's numbers are set out in our guide to men's silver chain types: 20 inches is the usual default at the collarbone, 22 gives a locket room to hang, 24 reaches mid-chest. Two things shift that here. Frame matters more than height — broader shoulders push you up a size, because the chain has further to travel before it can drop. And worn over a kurta, longer reads better, 22 or 24, because the fabric is loose and a short chain looks squeezed. Under a shirt at an open collar, 20 inches shows at the second button without swinging about.
Two of our chains bracket that range: the Classic Clip Chain (₹2,999) at 18 inches, shorter than the default and best worn alone, and the Box Chain (₹5,999) at 24 inches, which carries a locket low on the chest. The rest are in men's chains and lockets.
Layering a pendant chain with a mangalsutra
Measure what you already wear first. Mangalsutra lengths are not standardised and published ranges disagree, but the pattern Indian jewellers most often describe runs like this: 18 inches is cited most, North Indian styles often sit at 16 to 18 inches so the beads stay high, South Indian styles run 18 to 20 inches and often carry a thali, and long traditional styles reach 26 inches and beyond.
The four-inch gap that stops tangling
Two chains tangle when they are close enough in length to swing into each other. Leave roughly four inches between them. An 18-inch mangalsutra pairs with a 22 or 24-inch pendant chain — not 20, the length people instinctively reach for and the one that knots. Against a long 26-inch mangalsutra, put the pendant chain above it at 16 or 18.
Gauge is the other half. Two fine chains of similar thickness braid together within a day; a fine chain and a noticeably heavier one do not.
When to use a longer mangalsutra instead
If the pendant is what you wear daily, it is often easier to change the mangalsutra than to keep lengthening the pendant chain. Several modern mangalsutra designs are short-chain styles that sit high and layer cleanly underneath — the Round Spark Mangalsutra (₹3,499) is one. The silver mangalsutra guide covers the designs.
Pendant weight and chain gauge: the part everyone forgets
A chain has to carry the pendant, not just reach the right depth. Put a heavy pendant on a fine chain and the links stretch where the bail rubs, and it eventually parts at the weakest link. Which constructions take that load is covered in the chain types guide linked above. One check before buying a chain and pendant separately from the necklaces and chain pendants range: a wide bail slides loosely on a fine chain, and a narrow bail will not accept a thick one at all.
Buying as a gift without knowing her size
Default to 18 inches for a woman and 20 inches for a man. Those two are wrong for the fewest people. Safer still, buy a finished neckpiece rather than assembling a chain and pendant yourself, because a neckpiece is already designed at a length that suits its pendant. The Silver Crescent Neckpiece (₹4,199), Ma's Blessing Neckpiece (from ₹3,999) and Shimmering Circle Pendant Set (₹3,999, with matching studs) are that kind of buy. A Personalized Name Neckpiece (from ₹3,999) sidesteps the question differently — a name pendant is usually worn high, around 18 inches, and rarely moved.
Worth saying out loud: several of our product pages note that the price may change if the chain design or length is changed. Ask before you order, not after.
Knot it. A knot near the clasp takes off an inch or two. Crude, and it will crease a flat link permanently — but free.
Add a shortener clip. A small spring clasp catches the chain partway along and takes up the slack behind the neck. Cheap, reversible, the usual answer.
Have it shortened. A jeweller removes links and re-solders. Routine on 925 silver, but not reversible in practice.
Too short is harder: an extender is the only real fix. Buy long rather than short when you are guessing.
Frequently asked questions
Is 18 inches or 20 inches better for a woman? 18 inches for most Indian necklines, because it stays visible above a kurta neck. Choose 20 if you wear high necks, layer over a mangalsutra, or want the pendant on the chest rather than the throat.
What chain length do Indian men usually wear? 20 to 24 inches, with 20 the common default. Go to 22 for a locket, 24 over a kurta or on a broader frame.
How do I measure chain length at home? With a thread and a ruler, as above — standing, over the neckline you will actually wear, thread loose rather than pulled tight.
How do I layer a pendant with a mangalsutra without tangling? Keep about four inches between the two lengths and make the chains different gauges. An 18-inch mangalsutra pairs with a 22 or 24-inch pendant chain.
What chain length works with a saree blouse? It depends on the blouse, not on you. Shallow, high-cut: 18 inches. Deep or sweetheart: 20 to 22 inches. Measure while wearing the blouse.
Can a silver chain be shortened after buying? Yes — a jeweller removes links and re-solders the end, ordinary work on 925 silver. It is not reversible in practice, so try a shortener clip first. If you know you need a non-standard length, ask us before ordering.
